Impacts of slurry acidification and injection on fertilizer nitrogen fates in grassland

چکیده

Abstract Low nitrogen (N) use efficiency of broadcast slurry application leads to nutrient losses, air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and—in particular in a warming climate—to soil N mining. Here we test the alternative acidification injection techniques for their mitigation potential compared spreading montane grassland. We determined (1) fate 15 labelled plant-soil-microbe system soil-atmosphere exchange gases over one fertilization/harvest cycle (2) assessed longer-term contribution fertilizer organic formation by end growing season. The isotope tracing approach was combined with space time climate change experiment. Simulated increased productivity, ecosystem respiration, net methane uptake irrespective management, but generally low 2 O fluxes remained unchanged. Compared spreading, showed lowest thus productivity (38% recovery plant aboveground biomass). In contrast, highest total fertilization-induced 9–12 kg ha −1 season . Slurry management effects on CH 4 negligible. sum, our study shows that tested can increase and/or promote from applied remarkable extent. However, this is still not sufficient prevent mining mostly resulting large exports even exceed inputs.

Impacts of 120 years of fertilizer addition on a temperate grassland ecosystem

The widespread application of fertilizers has greatly influenced many processes and properties of agroecosystems, and agricultural fertilization is expected to increase even further in the future. To date, most research on fertilizer impacts has used short-term studies, which may be unrepresentative of long-term responses, thus hindering our capacity to predict long-term impacts. Here, we exami...

Greenhouse gas emissions from two soils receiving nitrogen fertilizer and swine manure slurry.

The interactive effects of soil texture and type of N fertility (i.e., manure vs. commercial N fertilizer) on N(2)O and CH(4) emissions have not been well established. This study was conducted to assess the impact of soil type and N fertility on greenhouse gas fluxes (N(2)O, CH(4), and CO(2)) from the soil surface. The soils used were a sandy loam (789 g kg(-1) sand and 138 g kg(-1) clay) and a...

The dynamics of nitrogen derived from a chemical nitrogen fertilizer with treated swine slurry in paddy soil-plant systems

A well-managed chemical nitrogen (N) fertilization practice combined with treated swine slurry (TSS) is necessary to improve sustainability and N use efficiency in rice farming. However, little is known about the fate of N derived from chemical N fertilizer with and without TSS in paddy soil-plant systems. The objectives of this study were (1) to estimate the contribution of applied N fertilize...

Greenhouse Gas and Ammonia Emissions from Slurry Storage: Impacts of Temperature and Potential Mitigation through Covering (Pig Slurry) or Acidification (Cattle Slurry).

Storage of livestock slurries is a significant source of methane (CH) and ammonia (NH) emissions to the atmosphere, for which accurate quantification and potential mitigation methods are required. Methane and NH emissions were measured from pilot-scale cattle slurry (CS) and pig slurry (PS) stores under cool, temperate, and warm conditions (approximately 8, 11, and 17°C, respectively) and inclu...
